The big fish name is very apt for the movie considering how the father Ed Bloom, liked to tell grand tales about his adventures and wanted to be considered something, a Big Fish, before the finish.
All his life Ed Bloom had been presenting his tales in a larger than life format, so much so that he believed in them so much that little Will Bloom (son) also believed them to be true.
But it all changes on the wedding night of Will Bloom when his father starts narrating about his adventures to the guest and Will thinks that his father is trying to take this one night away from him.
After several years of disconnect with father, Will and his wife move back to live with them when they find out that his father is dying.
Will wants just one thing from his father before he dies is to know the truth whether his tales are true or not.
During the phase of uncovering some documents related to his father's trust, he gets to meet one of the characters of his stories, though not as grand as the fairy tale version his father presented , it was quite a good adventure that his father had with the characters and presented it in a larger than life format.
When father passed away, his funeral is attended by all the characters that he had mentioned in his fairy tales or larger than life tales all of them being true about the characters.
Ed Bloom is shown to be a great story teller who was meant for bigger things in life which he believed firmly. Though his tales were not as grand as he had been describing through out his life, they actually were quite worthy. Son, Will Bloom, realizes after the passing of his father , that his father was in fact a Big Fish , who had lived his life more fullest than most of us would imagine.
